Describe the house and the room that Reyna must now call home in The Distance Between Us.

Both the house and the room that Reyna must now call home are pretty squalid. The house is overcrowded, and Reyna, Mago, and Carlos have to sleep in a tiny makeshift bed in a corner of Abuelo Augurio's bedroom. The room is an unpleasant place, smelling of sweat, beer, and cigarette smoke.

Reyna and her siblings have been forced to stay with their grandmother Evila and grandfather Augurio. Their place is small and overcrowded, with nowhere near enough room for all the children. Yet somehow, space is found for them; they will sleep in the corner of their grandfather's bedroom. Augurio doesn't sleep in the same room as Evila because when Reyna's cousin Elida came to stay, Evila kicked Augurio out of her bed to make way for her favorite grandchild.

It's fair to say that this isn't a very convenient arrangement, least of all for Reyna, Mago, and Carlos. They have to sleep in a tiny makeshift bed that's little more than a box spring raised on bricks and covered with a straw mat. The bed, if you can call it that, is pushed up against the wall beneath the very small window that looks out into the alleyway.

As well as having to put up with the unpleasant aroma of sweat, beer, and cigarette smoke, the children have to deal with the threat of scorpions. At least two of them do, at any rate. Mago sleeps against the wall because it's thought that if a scorpion attacks her, then she'll be okay, given that her star sign is Scorpio.

The proximity of the ramshackle bed to the alleyway means that the children can hear just about everything that goes on there, whether it's grunting noises (suggesting some kind of illicit sexual activity) or the sound of drunken men yelling obscenities.
