Describe the horrible atmosphere of the annex in The Diary of a Young Girl.
The secret annex is a four-room space hidden in Anne's father's office building. It is cramped, especially with eight people living inside of it, and no one is permitted any time to themselves. The air is stagnant, as they can rarely open windows because of the risk of alerting the outside world to their presence—especially because the building faces a canal which is patrolled by Nazis. They also have limited access to plumbing.
The door to the annex is concealed by a bookcase on the third floor of the building. Because the rooms are concealed in a place of business, the inhabitants must be very careful not to make noise during business hours so that no one will hear them.
