In Love and Other Catastrophes: A Mix Tape, the plot is not so much a concrete narrative as it is a vague timeline of events that relies heavily on the inference of the reader. Amanda Holzer crafts a minimalist story that can have very different meanings depending on the personal experience and disposition of the person who is experiencing it.

The story tells of a romantic relationship. The author starts out completely alone, and then becomes interested in socializing with the purpose of meeting a significant other. After meeting and eventually marrying a suitor, the relationship begins a seemingly slow and painful downfall, involving infidelity and heartbreak. Eventually, the author seems to feel a sense of triumph, having overcome the pain of the break-up, though the story ends with the author all by themselves again.

Amanda Holzer's created a very unique story using only song titles and musicians to tell a story. The story centers on the rise and fall of a romantic relationship.
