Darkie is the first name under which we encounter the equine protagonist of Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. In the first chapter, Darkie is living with his mother in a pleasant meadow. The meadow contains a pond with water lilies and rushes. The meadow is bordered by a plowed field on one side and a stand of fir trees on another side. Several other colts and their mothers live in the meadow. It is an idyllic environment, for the trees provide shade in the summer and there is a warm shed to keep off the winter chill. After Darkie is weaned, he finds the lush grass of the meadow a plentiful food. When Darkie is four, the kind Squire Gordon begins "breaking" him, accustoming him to saddle and bridle. He is temporarily moved to a meadow with sheep and cattle near a train station so that he will grow accustomed to trains rather than be afraid of them.
