Public law enforcement exists to enforce any and all laws created by congress. This means that, while certain divisions and individuals tend to be involved in the enforcing of specific areas of the law (such as homicide units, trafficking, etc.), police agencies are involved in enforcing laws and investigating crimes from traffic violations to domestic abuse to political fraud to murder. Police are authorized, under certain conditions, to detain, make arrests of individuals, transport them to jails, investigate crimes, and search vehicles, persons, and homes/buildings.

Public law enforcement is subject to investigations by the Department of Justice and is technically supposed to be held to certain standards of behavior and rules of engagement. However, police regularly get away with brutality and outright murder of people.
