The BFG takes place in two worlds: England and Giant Country. The England, in the story draws from elements of past and present rather than being set in a specific real moment. The major locations we visit in England are Sophie's orphanage and Buckingham Palace. The orphanage, a holdover from England of the past, contains many long hallways and dormitories full of children. Buckingham Palace is a familiar location, but it is made comedic because the BFG can simply step over the tall walls that guard it

Giant Country is a desolate place, with wide spaces full of dead trees and blue rocks. There is magic in Giant Country, but not necessarily a friendly kind. In Giant Country, they visit the BFG's cave, which is full of shelves full of dreams and is both creepy and enchanting. They also visit nearby Dream Country, which is full of mist and of dreams, the same physical stuff that the giant has in jars on his shelf.
