describe the control group, then identify the independent and

dependent variable in each of the following investigations please.

1. Scientist wanted to know whether Compound X0199 impeded the growth

of insects by interfering with the mitotic spindle of insect cells

during metaphase of mitosis. Millions of blood cells were isolated

with hemolymph of the Madeira cockroach. Roughly half of the cells

were grown in a sterile medium with Compound X0199. The other half

were grown in a sterile medium without Compound X0199. The cells

were examined after 48 hours and the data is presented in the

table below.

In this experiment, we are testing the effect of compound X0199 on the rate of mitosis in cockroach cells.  The independent variable in this experiment as it is presented is the presence of compound X0199 in the cell medium. The control is the second culture which does not contain compound X0199.

The dependent variable here is the final concentration of cells. Because the number of cells in the initial concentration varies by more than 10%, the results need some statistical anyalsis such as a chi square test to see if the results are significant.

the table :

Initial concentration of cells

With Compound X0199

5,050,000 cells

Without Compound X0199

4,990,001 cells

Final concentration of cells

5,050,000 cells

7,899,782 cells
