Stapleton and Sir Henry are in conflict because Sir Henry is romantically interested in Miss Stapleton.  Stapleton notices this fact and gets upset because Miss Stapleton is actually MRS. Stapleton, his wife.  Sir Henry notices Stapleton's bizarre responses to him, but does not understand why Stapleton acts the way he does.  The conflict is resolved when Sherlock Holmes trackes Stapleton into the mire where he supposedly dies.  Holmes uses the budding relationship between Sir Henry and Miss Stapleton to help solve the mystery.
