The weight of a liquid inside a container, acts with a force on the walls of the bottom of the container and on the surface of any object immersed in it. This force per unit of area is known as "hydrostatic pressure" and it is perpendicular to the container walls and the surface of any submerged object.
The hydrostatic pressure in a liquid, is calculated by the following expression:
P = ρ*g*h
P, is the hydrostatic pressure.
ρ, is the density of the liquid.
g, is the acceleration of gravity.
h, is the height of the fluid.
Substituting the data in the pressure equation, we have:
P = (1000)(10)(1.2)
P = 12000 = 1.2*10^4 N/m^2
The pressure also can be expressed in a unit called Pascal (Pa), where:
1 Pa = 1 N/m^2
So, we can also express this pressure as:
P = 1.2*10^4 Pa
