Pres Obama speech on national debt states that our sense of responsibiity to each other and to our country is patriotism. what do you think?
So are you asking what we think the definition of patriotism is? I think that is what you are asking and I have edited your question to show this. If so, I think that this is as good a definition as any.
I think that patriotism is the love of your country, but that this is not a blind love. It is not a love that agrees with the country and the government no matter what it does. Instead, it is a love that wants what is best for the country no matter whether that goes against your own narrow interests or against what the government is doing at the time. Included in this love for the country has to be a love for our fellow citizens because the country is really nothing other than its citizens.
So, for example, I think that paying taxes is a form of patriotism. I think that people like me who can afford to pay more than they are now should see increased taxes (or decreased spending on things that help us like our future social security payments) as an opportunity to help our country. We should realize that some things can be good for the country as a whole even if they hurt us in the short run. This is sort of like giving up something that you like to strengthen your relationship with another person.
All in all, I think this definition of patriotism is a good one.
