The deal or agreement that Matt and Saknis came to was precipitated by the encounter they had when Matt was injured. After disturbing a beehive looking for honey to eat, he fell from a tree into a pond, covered in bee stings. Saknis and his grandson Attean rescued and cared for him. They brought Matt provisions and helped to heal his injuries.

In return for the care and provisions, Matt attempted to give Saknis a book. When Saknis held it upside down, Matt realized the Indian could not read English. Saknis made a deal with Matt that he would continue to have provisions brought to him if Matt would teach his son Attean to read. Saknis knew that if Attean learned to read English, he would understand the treaties the "white man" insisted the Indians sign and keep them from losing more of their land.
