Chocolate has been shown to have several health benefits, especially dark chocolate. This is related to the plant phenols that are in the dark chocolate.

First of all, research has shown that dark chocolate helps to keep blood pressure down. This is good for the heart. Dark chocolate also has many antioxidants. Antioxidants help to get rid of free radicals.

Many doctors stress that this is not an excuse to go on a binge and eat a bunch of chocolate. It is still high in calories and needs to be eaten in moderation. The main thing to keep in mind is to replace milk chocolate with dark chocolate.

They say that dark chocolate actually has several health benefits and while this doesn't give anyone the free ticket to eati as much as possible, it has certainly made it a top choice for dessert food among those who wish to eat as healthy as possible.

Some of the health benefits of dark chocolate include:

  • lowers blood pressure
  • contains anti-oxidants
  • lower glycemic index - which means it won't spike blood sugar
  • contains healthy minerals because it is a plant based food
  • cacoa acts as a natural stimulant (like caffeine) which, in moderation, can be a healthy energizer
