The current justice system is actually considered by many legal experts to be too draconian, with too much of an emphasis on punishment rather than rehabilitation. The United States currently has the highest per-capita incarceration rate, as well as largest total number of incarcerated individuals. The vast majority of people are in prison for non-violent crimes mostly involving drugs or crimes against property. Offences which most modern industrialized states have either decriminalized or greatly reduced the punishment handed out. Most experts say that the United States needs to greatly reform its criminal justice system in order to make it more equitable and fair. Legal experts and activists also argue that punishment needs to fit the level of offence and that the punishments for non-violent crimes (especially drug related offenses) need to focus more on rehabilitation rather than incarceration.
