Culture and Social Imagination
-(appying our social imagination)
imagination is key to taking us beyond a study of “what is” in our society (global village)
to imagining “what could be” and “how can we make it so.”
There is a quote that I cannot remember exactly, and I couldn't find it on Google, but it is something like "What we cannot imagine, we cannot achieve." All of the world's greatest achievements were the results of someone's imagining a way to make things better.
If we were to put this subject into the form of a question, would it go something like this...
- In what ways does a culture or society rely on popular, shared conceptions in order to transform itself, reform itself or otherwise change? What examples from history demonstrate this idea?
Or is the question more like this...
- How can we prove or support the notion that imagination can literally change the world and has done so in the past? What predictions can we make about future changes based on what we see today in the popular imagination?
