One of the most significant causes of the Crusades was the massacre of Christian pilgrims in Jerusalem by the Seljuq Turks, who had seized power from the Saracen Caplihs. The Christian reaction to this was righteous anger, fueled by the constant invocation of "God's Will" by preachers and churches.

I would want to focus on the way in which the Crusades were detrimental in the long term, even up until today, in the relations between East and West and also the way that Christianity is received and perceived by Muslims. Any reference to the word "Crusade" automatically brings back memories of the acts of horror that were perpetrated by Western "Christians" showing how deep memory is concerning this historical event.

The crusades also had an unintended misfortune. The church in the West further alienated the church in the East. Tensions between the two church has been somewhat uneasy throughout their history from a theological and cultural point of view. But when the Western crusaders came and even sacked Constantinople, this was the final nail in the coffin. The Latin speak West and the Greek speaking East would break apart.

In addition, to this day there is a sense of guilt for the crusades. So, it has left a stain.

To continue #5 - there's a reason why the Renaissance began in Europe so soon after the Crusades. The rediscovery of the ancient knowledge that had been lost to much of Europe combined with the market for new goods brought back to Europe by returning crusaders to create a climate ripe for exploration, experimentation, and acquiring new knowledge.

A major positive result of the Crusades, for the West at least, was the fact that Europeans were exposed to much of the knowledge that had been lost in the West but preserved in Muslim countries.  They were reintroduced to many works from classic times in this way.  They were also introduced to the result of Muslim scholars efforts in things like algebra.  So the Crusades and the resultant contact with the Muslim world ended up helping Europe.

Some of the negative outcomes of the Crusades have to do with the continuing tension between cultures.  Both Christians and Muslims (among other religions as well) claim Jerusalem as their holy land.  During the Crusades, the Pope himself gave permission to kill Muslims.  He stated that it would not be murder because the people were doing God's work.  While many people now believe this was wrong, there is still tension between the two groups.  Of course, the Crusades aren't the only cause of this tension, but they certainly made things worse.

Cause of the Crusades:

The Crusades were caused by a conflict between Christians and Muslims over who had control of holy locations.  There were 3000 Christian pilgrims murdered in Jerusalem, one of the holy cities, for example.
