Religion is a system of belief. Sometimes we use the term loosely, but basically can be defined as "a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that establishes symbols that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion). Religion is mans attempt to apprehend God.  The statement neither presumes or denies the existence of a deity; it does, however, demonstrate an innate need for humanity to seek and or comprehend a creator.  Humanity desires deity: it is therefore innate in our DNA, or we have been imbued by said creator with such a desire.
