The film Divergent is a story based on the novel written by Veronica Roth, the story is about Tris Prior a young 16 year old girl who finds out that she is divergent, meaning that she would not fit in perfectly to any of the five groups that society was split into.

This incredible film has made me think about how stereotypes are being used by society to control people, by this I mean, Tris Prior is one of the many people living in the post-apocalyptic version of Chicago after the disaster caused by society destroyed the city, the leaders of the city decided to split each person into a faction (group) to remove the possibility of anyone exercising independent will and rethreatening the population’s safety. The five factions each person had to choose from are, Dauntless is a faction for the brave and fearless, people in Dauntless would have to always dress in black and would be the police of the city, the faction Amity is for the peaceful people who are full of love and forgiveness they would always dress in red and yellow and would be the gardeners and farmers of the city, the Erudite faction is for the intelligent, they would have to dress with at least one article of blue clothing per day claiming that the colour helps stimulate the brain, these people would be the doctors, scientists and teachers of the city, the faction of abnegation is for the selfless, these people always put others before themselves and they would dress in simple grey clothing, the abnegation faction is the government of Chicago and they also enjoyspending time helping the factionless, the Candor faction is for the honest and trustworthy the people in this faction must dress in black and white and are mainly judges and crime investigators, once you were placed into a faction you had to either stick with it for life or become factionless.

Tris Prior was one of the very few people tested that would fit into more than one faction and was known as a divergent, she could not tell anyone that she was a divergent because people in society would feel jealousbecause divergent’s can think in many different ways which would make her look smarter than the people in just one faction, society would then feel hate towards Tris and would not accept her because she does not fit in to one specific group and was seen as an outsider and notnormal ,society would also feel that she is a threat to them because she does not fit in therefore she would be an independent individual making her own decisions and controlling her own life, the police of the city would then try to get rid of her because she may cause an uprising of the people who want freedom and want to abolish the faction system. Tris knew that the consequences were far too large to allow anyone to find out that she was divergent, therefore she was forced to choose to join the faction Dauntless and try her best to fit in.

During her time in Dauntless she grew close to one very charming man named Tobias Eaton who she later found out was divergent too after he told her “I don’t want to be just one thing. I can’t be. I want to be brave, and I want to be selfless, intelligent, and honest, and kind” I feel that this quote is a really good example of how most people in our society feel, for example, gay people have been stereotyped in the past and have suffered many injustices, such as verbal and physical abuse and in extreme cases murder, this is all because society would not allow these people to be treated as equal as everybody else just because they may think and behave slightly different to other people.

I find this really disturbing because everybody in our society today are too afraid to express themselves and be who they truly want to be, I know this because I have felt this way myself because I feel that we as a society are becoming more judgemental because we are constantly comparing ourselves to other people to make us feel better about ourselves. I have heard people say many of times, ‘that’s not normal’ I feel that there is no such thing as a normal category of people, to me normal is anyone who is living their own life making their own choices, providing they are not harming themselves or anybody else.

The film Divergent is based on the novel by Veronica Roth. The story is about Tris Prior, a young 16-year-old girl who finds out that she is divergent, meaning that she doesn't fit any of the five factions that her society is divided into.

Tris Prior lives in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago. After a large scale disaster destroyed the city, the leaders decided to split each person into a faction (group) to remove the possibility of anyone exercising independent will and threatening the population’s safety. The five factions are: Dauntless, Amity, Candor, Erudite and Abnegation.  Dauntless is a faction for the brave and fearless.  People in Dauntless dress in black and are the police of the city.  Amity is for the peaceful people who are full of love and forgiveness. They always dress in red and yellow and are the gardeners and farmers of the city. The Erudite faction is for the intelligent. They have to dress in at least one article of blue clothing per day, as they claim that the color helps stimulate the brain. These people are the doctors, scientists and teachers of the city. The faction of abnegation is for the selfless, and these people always put others before themselves and they dress in simple grey clothing. The abnegation faction is the government of Chicago and they also help the factionless, the homeless people without a faction. Candor is for the honest and trustworthy. The people in this faction must dress in black and white and are mainly judges and crime investigators. Once you are placed into a faction you have to either stick with it for life or become factionless.

Tris Prior was one of the very few people tested that would fit into more than one faction and was known as a divergent. She could not tell anyone that she was a divergent because she would be killed. The divergent are feared because they can think in many different ways.  Tris knew that the consequences were far too large to allow anyone to find out that she was divergent, therefore she chose to join the Dauntless faction and try her best to fit in.

During her time in Dauntless she grew close to one very charming man named Tobias Eaton who she later found out was divergent too. He told her “I don’t want to be just one thing. I can’t be. I want to be brave, and I want to be selfless, intelligent, and honest, and kind.” I feel that this quote is a really good example of how most people in our society feel. For example, gay people have been stereotyped in the past and have suffered many injustices, such as verbal and physical abuse and in extreme cases murder. This is all because society would not allow these people to be treated as equal to everybody else just because they may think and behave slightly differently from other people.

I find this really disturbing because everybody in our society is too afraid to express themselves and be who they truly want to be. I know this because I have felt this way myself.  I feel that we as a society are becoming more judgmental because we are constantly comparing ourselves to other people to make us feel better about ourselves. I have heard people say many times, "that’s not normal." I feel that there is no such thing as normal. To me normal is anyone who is living their own life making their own choices, providing they are not harming themselves or anybody else.
