Could someone help me find a passage of 40 lines in The Picture of Dorian Gray ?
I need to find a passage of 40 lines (TNR when typed) and then i need to write a 2-4 page essay. Could someone please help me find a passage where the overall main idea clearly shown, a passage that I write about?
Why not use the passage from Chapter II in which Dorian is affected by the speech of the jaded Sir Henry Wotton, who encourages him to be Hedonistic? Here is an abbreviated form of the passage:
You have a wonderfully beautiful face, Mr. Gray....And Beauty is a form of Genius--is higher, indeed, than Genius, as it needs no explanation....It makes princes of those who have it....Beauty is the wonder of wonders....Time is jealous of you, and wars against your lilies and your roses....Youth! Youth! There is absolutely nothing in the world but youth!
This passage is pivotal to Dorian Gray's desire to remain young and embrace the enjoyment of sensual pleasures and place it as more valuable than ethics or morality. After hearing Sir Henry, Dorian looks anew at the painting and considers the "strange panegyric on youth, his terrible warning of its brevity." Standing before the painting, he vows that he would give his soul for not aging as the painting will not.
You may also wish to read another longer passage in which Sir Henry expounds on his idea that the world would gain a joy if it were to return to "the Hellenic ideal--to something finer, richer, than the Hellenic ideal, it may be."
