Could someon e please explain to me the process of the photovoltaic method of converting electricity.
Conductors are substances which allow electrons to easily pass from one atom to another. This like a group of kids (atoms) putting their toys (electrons) together and sharing them, instead of each kid hanging on to his own toy. A semiconductor is a substance that can pass electrons but needs outside influence such as an electric field to start and maintain the process. It is like a kid who is reluctant to join in sharing his toy but will do so with a little coaxing. Silicon is a semiconductor. The atoms need the electrons to get a little energy boost in order for them to flow freely through the substance. This energy boost is provided by light from the Sun being absorbed by the electrons.
