Conductors are substances which allow electrons to easily pass from one atom to another.  This like a group of kids (atoms) putting their toys (electrons)  together and sharing them, instead of each kid hanging on to his own toy.  A semiconductor is a substance that can pass electrons but needs outside influence such as an electric field to start and maintain the process.  It is like a kid who is reluctant to join in sharing his toy but will do so with a little coaxing.  Silicon is a semiconductor.  The atoms need the electrons to get a little energy boost in order for them to flow freely through the substance.  This energy boost is provided by light from the Sun being absorbed by the electrons.

Simple explanation

  1. Photons in sunlight hit the solar panel and are absorbed by semiconducting materials, such as silicon.
  2. Electrons  (negatively charged) are knocked loose from their atoms, allowing them to flow through the material to produce electricity. Due to the special composition of solar cells, the electrons are only allowed to move in a single direction.
  3. An array of solar cells converts solar energy into a usable amount of direct current  (DC) electricity

I meant to say convertin from solar energy to electricity.
