In literature, an exaggeration is often referred to as a hyperbole.  The point of such an exaggeration is to "evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally".  The quote from your story, "we weren't told we were being sent halfway across the north pole" is a great example of a hyperbole.  The character hasn't really been sent across the north pole.  As you pointed out in your heading, the US and Canada are actually quite close.  The character is pointing out that he has been sent to a place that is further than he would like.  He is intending to express anger and frustration about where he has been sent.  He does not literally mean that he has been sent a great distance is measurement on a map.
