I believe Juliet has changed significantly since the beginning of the play. At the beginning she is deferential and obedient to her parents, as befitting a girl who is almost fourteen. She goes to the party to meet Paris because her mother and father suggest it, and seems open to the idea of marrying him if that is what her parents want. When she falls in love with Romeo, she almost instantly speaks profoundly about what love is, and ponders at length the implications of her love for a sworn enemy in the famous "Wherefore art thou Romeo..." speech. After spending the night with her new husband, she bluntly refuses to marry Paris, evoking an outraged response from her mother and especially Lord Capulet. Her bravery in taking the sleeping poison, knowing the risks, demonstrates not only how much she loves Romeo, but her emergence as a courageous, if love-struck young woman.
