Though Erikson was a student of Freud, his education broadened considerably from Freud's principles. Among other things, he went on to study Yurok Native American tribe on their reservation and to work in Public Relations at Yale. His psychological theory of children's behavior strongly influences that role of society's influence upon children.

Bandura's psychological theory of behavior in children was built around the influence of observations through the process of observational learning. His theory was built around studies in which children were exposed to images of violent adults. He found that exposure to violence in adults precipitated violence in children that could be modified by the fact of reward or or punishment administered to the adult.
