Dolly was cloned from an adult somatic cell which contained the full chromosome complement of the parent sheep. The nucleus was transferred to an enucleated cell so that only the DNA of the sheep being cloned would be in the egg cell. Dolly was born on July 5, 1996 and was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell. The cell nucleus of an adult cell was placed into an unfertilized egg cell with its nucleus removed. This cell would then be stimulated to divide using an electrical shock, forming a blastocyst(ball of cells). This was then implanted into a surrogate mother sheep. The genes in the nucleus of the somatic cell were capable of reverting back to an embryonic state capable of differentiating into tissues and organs.
