Melting polar ice caps, rising sea temperatures, increased strength, violence and duration of extreme weather conditions (such as hurricanes and droughts) are all seen as evidence for climate change. These changes have been linked to rising levels of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere.

The atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, has increased by 30 percent since preindustrial times.
