The story takes place in an unnamed future time.  The book was written in 1954 during the Cold War and within short memory of WW II.  William Golding served in the war and was horrified to see how inhuman people could be toward one another.  He felt that, in situations such as war, when killing is not just permissible, but is encouraged, that people become savage and blood-thirsty.  His book is his efforts to show this tendancy in mankind.  The biggest instance of proof of this time is in the opening chapter.  Through the conversations of Ralph and Piggy, we gather that the boys were somehow dropped on the island by an aircraft that was attacked.  Ralph and Piggy discuss the possible events as soon as the two of them meet on page two of the book.  They point out where the passenger hold the boys were riding in crash landed and made a large, streak, or scar, on the island.  They go on to assume that the pilot and the rest of the craft was carried out to sea.  Through further conversation, it becomes clear that there is a world-wide catastrophic war going on and the boys were being sent from their school in England, to somewhere safer.  By using the unknown future time, Golding creates the possibility of any generation reading the book, seeing the book as a warning of behavior to avoid.
