Collapse of empires: the same or different?
  • What  were the cause for the collapse of the Roman Empire?  How were these similar or different to the collapse of the Assyrian, Hellenistic and Han dynasties?

I agree.  Anything that gets too big implodes within itself.  If you spread too much, you'll have be too over-extended and start to lose control of your empire.  That's what leads to your destruction.

When we think of the Roman Empire, to a certain extent we can argue that it was a victim of its own dazzling success. It managed to control a vast geographical territory which meant that it became increasingly vulnerable to attacks which it found hard to defend itself from. The bigger you get, the harder it is to maintain control and power, and this is one of the principal reasons for the decline of the Roman Empire.
