Prospero—legitimate Duke of Milan, because he is the older of the two brothers. Antonio, his younger brother, has usurped his position. Miranda is Prospero’s daughter.

Miranda—daughter of Prospero and niece of Antonio. In love with Ferdinand.

Ferdinand— son of Alonso, King of Naples, and nephew of Sebastian. In love with Miranda.

Alonso—King of Naples. Father of Ferdinand. Older brother of Sebastian. Helps Antonio overthrow Prospero, but regrets doing so.

Antonio—younger brother of Prospero and uncle of Miranda. Has usurped Prospero’s position as Duke of Milan with aid of Alonso but is now helping Sebastian in his plot to kill Alonso.

Sebastian—younger brother of Alonso, King of Naples, and uncle of Ferdinand. Plotting with Antonio to overthrow his own elder brother Alonso in order to become King of Naples.
