In my opinion Jo is the character who needs special mention. Jo is much different than the other girls. She is a tomboy and not interested in the things "normal" women of her time are. She has the most adventurous spirit out of the four girls. Jo's personality and interests make her an outsider even within her own family. The plays that she writes allow her to remove herself from her current situation and imagine how life could be different. She is a dreamer and no one to sit idly by as life goes on. While she tries to fight being a girl for so much of the book, in the end she participates in many "womanly" events and activities.
