Margaret, the main character of the story, suffers through all the confusion and questions that surround being a twelve year old girl. Looking at adolescence right around the corner, she has all the expected anxiety, fear and emotional turmoil normal at this age.

Margaret is a bright, reflective and curious girl. Her family provide her closest support system. Additionally, she has several good, close friends in whom she confides everything. Her most nagging questions revolve around the physical changes her body will inevitably go through, boys and religion. Through the course of the book, we see that Margaret is fearless in seeking answers to her nagging questions with the help of her friends.

Margaret seeks to find her way to a personally meaningful religion throughout the course of the book. This comes about because she is curious about both her grandparents' different religions. Margaret is an independent thinker and problem solver.
