In the book The Watsons go to Birmingham, Byron's parents are upset that Byron seems to think life is a joke instead of growing up.  They want him to realize how the world really is and that it is time for him to grow up.

The grandparent’s home is in the south so the Dad thinks since it is quiet in the area where the home is that the experience will be an eye opener for Byron.  They want him to recognize that he has it pretty good and it is time to grow up.
