Given the puritanical nature of the colony and the way that a puritan outlook is strong even in the character of Hester who does not accept many of the strictures of puritan life, it is no surprise that Hester wonders whether Pearl may not in fact be a demon child or a spirit of sorts.  In this case Pearl would be sent to discipline Hester and to remind her of her sin.  Hester wonders because of the way that Pearl acts and the way she treats her mother, particularly in public.  Though at times she appears to be attached to her mother, at others she seems to take great joy in persecuting her.
