In Chapter 11 of The Chrysalids, the group of telepaths decide that the next time Petra gets hreself in trouble and telepatically sreams in terror summoning help, that David will respond, then Rosalind, then anyone in the near vacinity who can reach her. They also decide that immediately upon reaching Petra, she will be rendered unconsious.

The reason for this decision is that her fobidden pony ride into the forest has brought David and Roslind and Michael running to cry of terror. In fact, it is here that Michael meets David and Rosalind for the first time. But they are followed into the forest by Jerome Skinner who is suspicious.

Uncle Axel later warns that many people are growing suspicios and asking the wrong kind of questions about David, whom Axel says has gotten sloppy in disguise his abilities. In light of this, their final decision is to be prepared to escape Waknuk at a moments notice.
