The significance of this case was that in this case, the Court said that affirmative action programs that gave preference to women were legal.  The Court said that the programs were legal when they were meant to remedy past discrimination against women.

The case fits in with other cases that have allowed affirmative action on the basis of race.  They indicate that, at that time, the Court was pretty liberal compared to what it is now.  As far as impact, it is one of the cases that has worked to promote the rights of women in the United States.
