Reasons Why Doctors Are More Important
A doctor and a taecher, who is important to the world? and why?
I will admit to some bias in my response to this question because I am a teacher. It is my opinion that a teacher is more important because he or she influences greater numbers of people in a positive way than a doctor can. A teacher can motivate many people to become doctors, as well as lawyers, scientists, engineers, and so on. But a doctor, while he or she can save a life, can do so only one life at a time. A teacher who motivates many people has a greater impact for good in the world.
I think it is equal. A teacher may have a chance to motivate more people, but she may not actually affect the lives of as many people. A doctor sees more different patients each year than a teacher sees different students. The doctor can affect those people in ways that are much more personal and have much more of an immediate impact on their life.
Teachers can help enrich the world intellectually, but doctors help keep us in good health. Both are equally important.
Doctors work to improve and preserve life, whilst teachers teach us the skills to function in life and hopefully educate and improve future generations. Without teachers a doctor would not have learned the skills nessesary to become a doctor. So yes a doctor can help you when you are sick or injured, but their work is in the "here and now". Teachers are educating the minds of the future and to me it is more important that the human race moves forward.
Teachers are the cornerstone of every other career. Parents teach their children, ministers and other spiritual advisors teach, authors teach through their writing, classroom teachers build upon and supplement previous teachings. Without teachers in whatever form, how does anyone learn. It is a shame that society does not appreciate and pay teachers adequately for their service.
Assuming both are equally available to all, the teacher is more important in assuring that individuals attain all that they are capable of in life.
Going back to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, though, an individual isn't going to attain self actualization if he/she isn't healthy. In this regard then, doctors are more important in assuring that basic needs are met.
Without teachers to motivate our young people to become excited about learning where would our doctors come from? My heart tells me that teachers are more important, but this is kind of like the chicken and the egg question.
It all depends on context. If someone is injured, who do they need most? You have to define the context first, then the most reasonable solution can be found. While it is true that everyone needs a teacher to be educated, it takes a doctor or surgeon to treat someone who is injured.
Is a doctor more important than a teacher? I say the success of mankind solely rests on those who step up to the plate and teach others to carry on. As an educator for the past three decades, I like to think that I have made a contribution toward the success of my future. If not for teachers the space program would not have advanced as it has. If not for teachers, there would be little movement toward eliminating global warming. If not for teachers, our country may not have embraced its first African American President. The question is "Who is a teacher?" Many "teachers" have never attended a college or university. Many have never cashed a paycheck. Yet, somehow we learn what we need to survive. As we enter into the 21st Century we must ask ourselves "What do we need to know to survive and who is best equipped to teach us?" Maybe it will be an accomplished professor from a prestigious university. Maybe it will be your next door neighbor. It might even be a stranger off the street. I take much pride in being referred to as a teacher. There are so many of us. My father was my greatest teacher with only an eighth grade education. Yet he managed to teach me how to survive in a world that would be ever changing. He may not have had a college degree, but he had the ability to "teach" the survival skills my brothers and sisters so cherish today. We are all teachers. Do we teach?
Doctors become doctors by learning to be doctors from others who know better than them. Similarly, people of all other profession depend to a large extent on learning from others to acquire skills and knowledge required to practice their profession. In this way, teaching and teachers play a very important role in providing a society with all types of capable professional of all types including doctors. Thus I believe that a teachers are more important than not just a doctors, but all other professionals.
