I really like the idea of using a quote for your essay's hook. It is a good way to grab reader attention. The basic guide of using Gene's internal conflict as the framework for the essay is a good choice too. The story shows that Gene definitely has a lot of internal conflicts going on. One such internal conflict is his relationship with Finny and how he feels about it. Gene likes Finny as a friend a lot, but Gene also worries about his own independence and identity outside of Finny. Readers get to see this fear in Gene already in chapter one:

What was I doing up here anyway? Why did I let Finny talk me into stupid things like this? Was he getting some kind of hold over me?
