This is present the whole time.  You can see it where Pony has to go in front of the judge to see whether he is going to be taken from his brothers and put in a home.

Ponyboy, Johnny, Dallas vs. Fate

You can say that Pony and Johnny fight fate when they try to get away from trouble with the police only to end up getting hurt by the fire.
