Can you help with five important quotations from "A Midsummer Night's Dearm", Act1 Scene2 and explain why they are important?
The purpose of this scene is to introduce the workmen to us and to tell us that these workmen are planning to put on a performance of "Pyramus and Thisbe" in hope of being chosen to perform the play for Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding. They plan to meet in the forest at night and that sets up the main setting of the play because that's where Hermia, Lysander, Helena, and Demetrius are also headed. The most important quotes are the ones that identify Bottom as the workmen who is something of an idiot, thus justifying Puck's actions later when he turns Bottom's head into the head of an ass. Quince is the play's director and he assigns Bottom the role of Pyramus but in ll. 49-50, Bottom wants to play Thisbe as well. In l. 68, he asks to play the part of the lion. After Quince tells him he will play no part but that of Pyramus, Bottom waxes on about what sort of beard he should have for the part, ll. 89-92. These lines all show us that Bottom thinks very highly of his skills as an actor and that he is self-centered. Line 106, spoken by Quince, announces where the workmen will meet to practice their play, "At the Duke's Oak we meet."
