I need to draw a political cartoon about the Haitian revolution or the Mexican war of independence. My teacher said it has to be related to the Mexican war of independence or to the Haitian revolution.

No matter which thing you draw about, you need to know something about the most important points of the events you are drawing about.

I know a bunch more about the Mexican war of independence than the Haitian one.  Some important things to know about that war:

  • It came about because the creoles (Spanish born in Mexico) didn't like being treated like they weren't as good as the Peninsulares (born in Spain)
  • It came after failed attempts by Hidalgo and Morelos that were very bloody affairs with poor Indians taking out their frustrations by killing whites -- became something of a race/class war.
  • It succeeded because Augustin Iturbide, the head of the army that was supposed to be fighting the rebels went over to their side.  He eventually became the first Emperor of Mexico
  • It didn't change much -- didn't bring democracy or racial equality or anything.

So if I were you, I'd try to draw a cartoon pointing out one of these things or making fun of one of them or something like that -- some sort of commentary on one of these important aspects of the war of independence.

I hope that helps...
