Can we convert the story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant into a play or drama?Absolutely! It would probably would work better as a film or radio drama, rather than on stage, so you can show/evoke a) the passage of time and b) the grand party, but otherwise, it would make a fine play. It's got all the elements: limited number of characters, a single focus, strong scenes, clear dialogue, etc.
In fact, it's already been made into dramas. You'll find links to an audio version below, and to an article discussing a dramatic version. At least one film version has been made. It's part of the Benard Wilets series on great literature.

I wish I could remember the details, but I've seen "The Necklace" adapted as a movie on TV. It had some "made-for-TV" title, but it was clearly the same story. It was not as powerful as the written work, of course, but it has been done, I'm sure. The movie adaptations of "The Lottery" and "The Gift of the Magi" were recognizable but weak in the same way.

What an interesting question! Thinking about it, I definitely agree that this would make an excellent stage play. You might have to "flesh it out a bit" to make it longer, as it is only a short story, but there is definite scope for this. Great idea. What an excellent assignment it would make for a creative writing class!

Yes; I have always thought that this story would be a very good play because of the surprise ending.  Even a short film would be very effective, as well.

Since the story was first published in 1884, it has long been out of copyright. You are free to adapt it into a play without permission.
