A caddy at a golf club, Dexter Green dreams of being a championship golfer himself; however, he quits when the young Judy Jones appears on the scene and treats him poorly.  Green eventually goes to a prestigious college (even though he can't really afford it) and becomes very concerned with making money at a successful laundry business.  After becoming a success, Green meets Judy Jones again in a few coincidences and she again deeply affects him.  Smitten with Judy, Green lavishes her with affection only to be dumped a month later.  After serving in the World War, Green learns that Judy has married a man who treats her horribly.  Instead of grieving for Judy, Dexter Green grieves about his own dream of beauty dissolving into nothingness.
