What do you think this this story tells us about American society?
This story is on ESPN. Cops arrest man in lewd post-BCS video the cruel and odious nature behind this act notwithstanding, consider that this video “went viral on the Internet.” Can someone tell me what does this tell you about American society please?
I think that this tells us two main things about American society.
First, it tells us that we take sports much too seriously. People who are sports fans tend to live and die, figuratively speaking, with their teams' fortunes. All too often, this spills over into real violence or into the sort of stupidity that this Alabama fan engaged in.
Second, I think it shows us something about our attitudes towards masculinity and sexuality. We feel that a man who does something sexually aggressive like that to another man has proved his masculinity while taking away the masculinity of the person who is the victim. (Of course, in this case, the victim was passed out so I'm not sure that the other guy really showed domination.) We think of male sexuality as a dominating thing, which is one reason that men tend to fear homosexuals. We feel that a true man is supposed to be able to sexually dominate others.
