Baba's first battle was within his self.  He had a boy he grew up with whom he played with as a child.  They were raised together in the same home.  When Baba and Ali were older, Baba put him to work as his servant.  Ali married a woman.  They were both Hazara's, a socially unaccepted group in Afghanistan.  After his wife had died Baba became lustful towards Ali's wife and had slept with her.  The union produced a son named Hassan.  Hassan was raised in a small home on the property of Baba.

Baba watched his son grow and did provide for him.  He even paid for him to have his hair lip repaired.  He was proud of the boy because of the boy's courage and nature.  However, Baba was torn and humiliated by his actions and that he had produced a child with a Hazara woman.  He had abandoned the child when he left for America and kept the relationship of his two sons a secret which he had taken to his grave.

Baba was also in conflict with his government and the religious zealots of Afghanistan.  He was not a religious man.  He was well liked but he did not practice the teachings of the Koran.  He drank and had lavish parties.  He was a man with no spiritual guidance.

Baba was in conflict with Amir.  He had trouble accepting Amir's short comings.  He originally only saw his son in comparison to Hassan.  Hassan was courageous and had a strong character. He was a hard worker.  Amir was quiet and a reader of books.  He liked to write and he was not a fighter.  Hassan often fought his battles for him.

Baba resolved his relationship with Amir before his death.  He showed his son his love by not letting him work and had him go for his college education.  He helped his son arrange his marriage to the girl he had chosen.  He did not judge the girl even though he knew about her past.  Baba used what little money they had for a great wedding and party.

Baba was also in conflict over the feelings of the death of his wife.  He had loved her very much.  He and she were very happy when they were expecting their son together.  After her death he handled his grief by not speaking about her.  He never shared anything personal about her to Amir.  Amir had to find out a detail about his mother from a beggar on the street who had once been a Doctor who had worked with his mother when she was pregnant.
