Metaphysical poetry is highly intellectual and often deals with philosophical issues, questions about the nature of man and life in general.  Metaphysical poets often use the language of the sciences, medicine, law, and philosophy to express emotions and feelings.  John Donne, one of the most famous metaphysical poets, often uses conceits (extended metaphors or comparisons of unlike ideas or objects) and paradoxes (descriptions or ideas that seem self-contradictory but reveal a deeper truth).  In general Donne's poems seem contradictory because he is attempting to use the intellect to answer questions that seem unanswerable and that society does not have answers for.
