You'll find a good deal of action, some clear-cut symbolism and some more subtle symbolism as well. In addition to the questions to ask yourself while reading presented above, I'd add the following. 

Where is the line between civilized people (children included) and our animal nature? Do we always know when we've crossed the line?

You may wish to consider the allegorical aspects of this novel by reading a critical overview and the biography of William Golding, both of which are here on enotes.  For, Golding considers the question of the inherent nature of man.  Is he essentially good, or is evil inherent in him?
