There's quite a good version of the play done by the Simpsons if you can find it online, it does a decent job of things.  But basically Hamlet, prince of Denmark, is disturbed thinking his father's death was unnatural.  He suspects his uncle Claudius who has murdered his mother Gertrude and become King.

There are problems with his girlfriend Ophelia, whose father Polonius is Claudius' right hand man.  Hamlet is shown his father's ghost, the ghost tells him he was murdered.

Hamlet uses the players that come to visit to put on a play and when the King looks guilty, he thinks he knows to do something.  He is sent to England to be killed but sees through the plot and returns.

He is challenged to a duel by Laertes (Ophelia's brother and Polonius' son) and Laertes has a poisoned sword to kill Hamlet.  In the course of the duel Hamlet, Laertes, Gertrude and the king are killed in turn.  Horatio is only left to tell the story as Fortinbras (another guy you'll need to know to understand the play well) has come to take over Denmark.
