A boss almost has to be a leader, otherwise, how can he get a staff to respect and follow him?  A boss is a title, a job or rank to itself, while a leader is a quality a human being has or demonstrates within such a job.  I have had bosses that are not leaders, that is for sure, but the best bosses I had sure were.

A boss most certainly be a leader. Human nature learns by doing, yes, but a boss must lead and model the skills and attitudes wanted in the employees. A good boss will have been such a good leader, that when s/he departs the place of employment for other jobs, the employees can continue in an effective and productive pattern.

Of course a boss can be a leader.  Some are not, but it is quite possible.  If I were the owner of a company, I would certainly look to hire managers who could both inspire and motivate the workers to be their best and most productive.  If the boss is unable to do this, the company will not thrive as it could or should.

I would think that in todays world a boss would also have to be a leader. Coming from the education field the Superintendents and Principals are bosses but more importantly must be leaders also. I would see no reason why this wouldn't be the same in the world of business.

I wonder if by "boss" you mean "manager." In organizational leadership literature there is a clear distinction between leading versus managing. Leaders are visionaries who see the big picture and can mobilize people to achieve the organization's goals. Managers are day-to-day operators whose job is to help execute the leadership plan.

I do not think this is possible in most professions, especially in ones where the workers are required to use their brains.  When a boss just tries to tell people what to do all the time without trying to get them on his/her side, the workers get angry and aren't so willing to work their best.

Yes a boss, including a supervisor or a manger can be a leader. as a matter of fact, to be a good boss, one must be a good leader also. Further, when we say that a successful leader can be a boss, does it not also mean that the same person can be be a leader as well as a boss.

Boss is a person who has some formal authority to direct and control activities of his subordinates by virtue of his position in the organization structure. This formal authority is not sufficient for boss to get the best output from his subordinates. For that the boss needs additional leadership qualities and behavior, which makes a person a leader. Being a boss in no way prevents a person from having qualities of a good leader and behaving like one.

I think both bosses and leaders take charge of other people and direct and assist them in fulfilling their obligations and responsibilities. Both bosses and leaders, if they are in charge can also give assistance, help and clarify things for employees and can serve many different roles.
