Though at first, it seems that Natalie is the impatient one as she waits for Zoe to slowly finish reading her book, that's quickly revealed to not be the case. Natalie says that there are writers and there are talkers; the talkers are the ones who make things happen by pushing ahead. Zoe is the talker and Natalie is the writer.

Zoe is impatient because she pushes Natalie forward when Natalie was only planning to print out a few copies of the story for people she knows. Zoe immediately jumps to talking about Publishers Weekly and pushing Natalie to overcome her fear of rejection to get her story published. That's why their friendship was a "push-and-pull" relationship from the start; Zoe always pulls Natalie ahead. She convinces her to do things and then makes those things happen.

The author says that Zoe never believes there is anything she doesn't know or do. Her confidence propels her forward and makes her impatient to get on with things. Natalie, on the other hand, is cautious and approaches things more seriously. Where Zoe sees only success, Natalie sees the piles of rejection envelopes that would-be authors get from her mother's publishing company. That kind of awareness makes her more patient and cautious than her confident friend.
