Angel is described as a bully and a thief by Eddie. He also believes that Angel might have stolen Mr. Stiles's truck when Eddie parks it outside his apartment after making a run to the dump for Mr. Stiles. The reader is never sure whether Angel actually stole the truck, but Eddie seems convinced that he did and that he is also out to kill him with the gun he gets from Eddie's aunt. Angel wanted Eddie to help him kill Jesús's killer and when Eddie refuses Angel labels him a "sissy." From then on Eddie is suspicious of him.

While the reader knows that Angel has stolen many things in his life (Eddie even pictures him breaking into a house with his legs hanging out a window), the only thing Eddie explicitly refers to as definitely stolen is the crucifix which hangs around Angel's neck. It seems to symbolize Angel's total contempt for both his religion and his culture. He seems totally without conscience or pride.
