The Book of Job

I am getting ready to teach my sophomores in an IB programme The Book of Job. Does anyone have any lessons or activities that could get me going? The unit focuses on wisdom, folly, and philosophy. TBOJ will be the first literarture in this unit, followed by Nectar in a Sieve and then The Prophet.

Very interesting book to focus on! In addition to some of the excellent discussion starters raised above, you might want to think of using this liteature to consider how we empathise, counsel, support or mourn with those who are suffering (or not). Job's "friends" clearly present a bad model for this, but it would be worth analysing their arguments and seeing if they have any value, then perhaps allowing students to role play an alternative way of being a "friend" to someone like Job who is in need.

Here are some insight on the book of Job.

1. Talk about suffering. Obviously Job suffers. What are the positive and negative points about suffering. For example, do we learn through suffering? Do we mature through it? If so, then these are some positive points.

2. Talk about the importance of mysteries. In the end God does not give Job an answer. This can be a great discussion on the fact that there are some things in life we won't understand. Can we live with this?

I have not taught the Book of Job to high school students, but I do find that one of the most interesting elements to come out of it is the idea of what do people deserve.  A very interesting element to Job's predicament is the idea of being tested and having to endure suffering and pain.   This could yield a series of questions:  Do people deserve what they get?  If God is merciful, why would he subject Job to such pain?  Does the ending meet up with the story?  I think there are great discussion points behind the story that any student, especially high school, could feature good discussion points.

In reply to #2: Thanks for answering back. This is my first year and it has been a challenge to read the novels prior to the students and coming up with lessons that are involving and challenging.

sorry..actually i dont but i have heard really good feedback from the book of job..thinking thats a good choice and i have been in the IB program and its not the most "exciting" class or whatever to take so what ever you decide to do..try to make it fun maybe and excitin if you maybe want to get your kids to enjoy...some kids you may have to cath their attention in crazy and fun things in the calss...it may be their learning style..Areas of interactions<==.hope that helped a little!=0

sorry..actually i dont but i have heard really good feedback from the book of job..thinking thats a good choice and i have been in the IB program and its not the most "exciting" class or whatever to take so what ever you decide to do..try to make it fun maybe and excitin if you maybe want to get your kids to enjoy...some kids you may have to cath their attention in crazy and fun things in the calss...it may be their learning style..Areas of interactions<==.hope that helped a little!=0
