Given our fascination with Plato and the constant use of his texts as those on which to base arguments for our current conception of Western Civilization, it is interesting to note how attached he was to a classist interpretation of people and their value.  His model for educating leaders was one of using an invented myth that would teach that people were born with a certain metal in them and that only those with gold should be allowed into the ruling positions in society.  They will be rigorously tested, not to see if they will stick to their own morals, but to see if they will adhere to the rules which the rulers or the society have attempted to instill in them.
